Wine and Dine Wednesdays: District Commons

Latest dining stop was in DC at District Commons part of Passion Food Hospitality. This spot (conveniently located just a few blocks from my office) has a great bar scene, super friendly (and accommodating service) and consistently great food! This trip we were celebrating a friend’s mom’s birthday and they really went above and beyond in every way!

Pretzel Bread with Mustard Butter

The house made pretzel bread started each meal. Served warm and with a mustard butter it is both unique enough to be memorable, but pleases everyone!

Biscuit Charcuterie Board

“Pig” Board

The “Pig” board was recommended as a good sharing option and a fun way to start the meal. The biscuits were buttery, flaky and delicious!

Fried Oysters with Bleu Cheese Dressing

Crispy Fried Oysters Blue Cheese Slaw, Frank’s Red Hot Remoulade

I started with the fried oysters which we a little over breaded but still really meaty and the bleu cheese sauce was awesome – so chunky and rich!

Pimento Cheese Fritters on an Arugula Salad

Arugula Salad Pimento Cheese Fritters, Green Tomato Chutney, Chicken Cracklings

Beet Salad

Pickled Beet Salad Candied Marcona Almonds, Goat Cheese

Deviled Egg Salad

Mixed Green Salad Deviled Eggs, Praline Bacon, Mustard Vinaigrette

The 3 salads had classic southern touches, like pimento cheese and deviled eggs and, of course, thick bacon, but they were dressed up nicely. The acid in each dressing also balanced the rich southern touches well.

Lamb Shoulder

Latin Style Lamb Shoulder with Black Beans

Rock Fish

Grilled Rock Fish with Oven Roasted Tomatoes, Chanterelle Mushrooms and Risotto (Daily Fish Special)

Curried Tilapia

Seared Salmon with Green Curry and Black Lentils, Served with Indian Roti

Each of the entrees (sorry the pics are a bit blurry) were a good portion, packed with flavor and nicely presented. The latin lamb shoulder was a particularly hefty dish, whose description definitely did not do it justice.

We finished off with cupcakes from Fluffy Thoughts that my mom brought in. They were a cute touch to end the birthday celebration!

Overall I was really impressed with the service at District Commons!  It was a little loud groups to hear each other in the up front room where we were near the bar. So, if you go with a group, I recommend asking for seating towards the back. The food was all good, but I would say that you can’t miss the warm pretzel bread or pimento cheese – arugula salad. I could pass on the “Pig” Board but just because there was nothing outstanding about it.
