Wine & Dine Wednesdays: GG’s

No matter how much time has passed, you can always get together over good food and drink and feel like nothing has changed. This weekend we celebrated a friend’s birthday at the East Village spot, GG’s, perfectly designed for large groups and birthday dinners. So perfect they have several parts of the website dedicated to party brunches and dinners. Thanks to some great planning by the birthday girl, we simply sat down and the dining experience began – no choices, no indecisive ordering, no problems!

GG Menu

Dandelion Greens

Porcini pork ragu

We started the meal with a dandelion green salad with walnuts and brown butter vinaigrette, and porcini mushroom pasta with pork ragu. The dandelion greens were underwhelming and underdressed but the pasta was a nice hearty start to the meal.

Roast Chicken

Rotisserie Beets

The main courses included roasted acorn squash with fresh ricotta, shaved beets and arugula. This was light and tasty. The salt bake chicken with chimichurri sauce was so juicy and flavorful. It had the flavor you always wish you could get at home when you make a classic roast chicken – simple but definitely satisfying.

We had 2 fresh sides of roast rosemary wild mushrooms – always a winner, and steamed kale. The kale looked plain, but the chili, lime and honey gave the hearty greens an amazing balanced sweet acid flavor.

1986 Pizza

Finally we had 2 pizzas, the 1986 which was soppressata pizza with pickled peppers and roast fennel (my favorite dish of the night!), and the Ebony & Ivory which was a ricotta, mozzarella, garlic and chili flake pizza. I didn’t get a chance to try this one which may speak for itself in how much everyone loved it!

Group Shot

Once the food arrived conversation ceased – the food was the whole focus!

Birthday Girl

We finished the meal with a childhood classic brownie sundae for the birthday girl. The brownies were decadent with a smooth ganache, but the ice cream was nothing special.

Overall the shining stars were the squash bake, roasted chicken and soppressata pizza with pickled peppers. Pass on the dandelion salad. The service was friendly and incredibly accommodating to vegetarians and changes we wanted to make to the prix fixe menu.
